Crowns
When a tooth is badly broken down, or very badly worn, it needs to be held together for strength, and to be covered to protect the deeper layers of tooth structure. This is best done by completely covering the tooth with a crown.

In the past, crowns were made of gold alloy or porcelain fused onto gold, or entirely porcelain for front teeth. During the 1980s and 90s, research into porcelains brought about some dramatic improvements in this material for dental use. We can now offer crowns made entirely of porcelain, which are nearly as strong as the cast metal crowns, and have similar wear characteristics to dental enamel.

The new generation of porcelains are also much more beautiful that the older versions. We can now make crowns look truly like tooth structure.

Porcelain Veneers
Porcelain veneers are used to cover, artificially reshape, and change the appearance of front teeth. Veneers fit over the front surface and biting edge of the tooth, usually after a little reduction of that tooth surface.

They can be used to hide or replace unsightly fillings or blemishes on the front teeth, cover discoloured teeth, widen teeth to close gaps between teeth, artificially give the impression of straightening misaligned teeth and restore chipped or worn teeth.

Particular care must be taken in planning porcelain veneers, as there are many situations where other techniques are superior. When a porcelain facing is appropriate, however, it will produce a beautiful, natural looking and very long lasting result.

Porcelain Inlays
Sometimes, a tooth will need a very large filling, but a crown is not really justified. If the requirement is too large to expect a standard composite resin restoration to last, we will recommend using porcelain instead, for the extra strength it will provide. This procedure uses the same porcelain used for crowns, and produces a beautiful, natural looking result.
