Cosmetic Dentistry
not only making teeth look beautiful...

Cosmetic Dentistry is not only about making teeth look beautiful, although we certainly do achieve that at Integrated Dentistry in Bondi Junction / Woollahra. A beautiful smile is the one facial feature which is most remembered, and it affects the way you feel about yourself, and the way others feel about you. This affects social interactions as well as employment opportunities.

A recent American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry survey showed that –

Cosmetic Dentistry in Woollahra
  • More than 92% of adults agree that an attractive smile is an important social asset.
  • Nearly as many, 88% say they remember a person with an especially attractive smile.
  •  85% agree that an unattractive smile makes a person less appealing to the opposite sex.
  • 74% say that an unattractive smile can hurt a person’s chances for career success.

At Integrated Dentistry, we acknowledge that cosmetic dentistry encompasses the very best of the art and the science of dentistry. To recreate the natural beauty of teeth requires a detailed understanding of the science of beauty as well as a feeling for the art of beauty. To produce a beautiful result in the mouth requires an understanding of the many materials and technologies available for our use in dentistry. Finally, to make that beauty last, requires a complete understanding of the function of the teeth and jaws. Sadly, it is not unusual for us to see patients who have had beautiful cosmetic dentistry done, only to have it destroyed by an imbalance of the the way the teeth bite, and distorted function.

The process of cosmetic dentistry is as complex and comprehensive as anything in dentistry today. The level of experience and knowledge required to diagnose, plan, fabricate, and place exceptional dentistry that rivals nature, demands the utmost in skill and artistry. It is the epitome of dental art and science.

Due to his experience and understanding of cosmetic dentistry, Dr Baret was one of the first five dentists in Australia selected to be a member of "Cosmetic Dentists of Australia" (CDA).

Often, the difference between an ordinary and a beautiful smile is very slight, and requires only a very minor change. In some cases, dramatic changes in appearance can be achieved with artificial facings placed on the front teeth.

Often, however, this is not enough for lasting results, as poor placement of the teeth will mean that there is will be too much strain on the facings, and they will become damaged or broken off altogether. It is these cases which need teeth to be moved into a better relationship to minimize strain. In such cases, orthodontic treatment is used for both function and appearance (see Full Body Orthodontics and TMJ).

One of the advances in dental materials during the 1980s has meant that we have not needed to use dental amalgam at all since 1990. Amalgam is the silvery-grey (often black) material which was once the mainstay of filling materials. Although amalgam has various mechanical and biological problems, it was the only practical material available for over 100 years. Now, amalgam never needs to be used again, and, for biological reasons, it has been banned in a number of countries throughout the world. All of our filling materials are now tooth coloured, and nearly all situations are metal-free. On those occasions when metal is required for strength, it is totally hidden from view.
